French MS 1 Mappemonde

On Monday the CHICC team digitised French MS 1. This impressive Mappemonde (Map of the World) was created in 1546 by Pierre Desceliers.

Measuring 2.6m x 1.3m it was not only a challenge to digitise, but also required a team of four members of Collection Care staff to transport the item from the stores for photography. The item is too big for us to digitise in our usual photography studio, so we converted the Spencer Room of John Rylands Library for the day.

The map was supported on the floor of the Spencer Room, the camera was mounted on the triped and looks down over the Mezzanine balcony.
